THIS IS AN ORIGINAL, SECOND PATTERN KRIEGSMARINE E-BOAT BADGE (SCHNELLBOOT KRIEGSABZEICHEN), (U.S. equivalent = PT Boat). Prior to April 1941, E-Boat crew members were normally awarded the Kriegsmarine Destroyer badge for their service. On 30 May 1941, the distinctive service of E-boat crew members was acknowledged by Grossadmiral Dr. Raeder's in his approval of a special badge, which depicted an e-boat slicing through the waves. Unfortunately, the efforts by the designer to keep the e-boat within the badges gilt, oak leaf wreath, caused it to appear "stubby", and was not as recognizable from a distance as e-boat crew members would have liked. Consequently, after two (2) years of complaints, a second edition of this badge was instituted on 18 January 1943, which elongated the bow of the e-boat beyond the wreath, making it appear far more dynamic. The badge offered here has a straight, needle style attaching pin and is maker marked "G.H. OSANG / DRESDEN/ L 12" in three (3) lines. While it has seen some extensive wear, the gilt finish is still intact, as is the polished steel e-boat.
